Our Principles
Cambrian Mountain Lamb Marketing Initiative - Principles:
- All eligible lambs must be born and reared to weaning in the defined LFA (Less Favoured Area) geographical area of the Cambrian Mountain Initiative (CMI) and slaughtered in a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) approved abattoir within the Cambrian Mountain area.
- Lamb finishing will be permitted on LFA land that is under the sole management of CMI members and which is also within the geographical area of the CMI.
- All CMI applicants to fully and successfully participate in a 1st season probation period before progressing to full membership. Membership can be withdrawn at any stage, a result of unsatisfactory group behaviour or of non compliance/s.
- Distribution should take into consideration the number of ‘food miles’ generated and the environmental impact of distribution and packaging on the local food supply chain.
- Only lambs from ewes of Welsh Hill Breeds will be eligible for CMI branding, audited by annual flock inspection with random checks in the abattoir lairage of Animal Health allocated flock numbers.
- Stock will be reared within defined extensive farming systems appropriate to the geographical area. For example: -
- All lambs to result from natural mating only (no synchronised mating with the aid of sponges and PMSG permitted). Group breeding exceptions by prior approval only.
- Only approved feeds permitted at grass post weaning for lambs
- Indoor finishing of lambs by agreement
- All members to lead on key policies of the CVO Wales (Chief Veterinary Officer)
- Active and monitored Animal Health Planning, SCOPS (Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep)

- Members should seek to ‘bring on’ a future generation of young farmers by sharing their skills and knowledge through active participation in Farming Connect Discussion Groups and to participate in Farming Connect Programmes provided by Hybu Cig Cymru and other providers.
- Farmers should aspire to develop renewable localised energy generation and shared disposal of waste. This will be an option within the Farming Connect Whole Farm Plan, delivering farm resource auditing to include energy and waste.
